Handshakes are such a frequent part of life that we don’t consider how important they are. Yet, get a bad one, and we don’t forget it or the person who gave it. How can you make sure your handshake gives the right message? Here are a few simple things to remember:
▶ Make it brief. No extended pumping. Up and down twice is enough. Use your whole hand, not just your fingers.
▶ Speak as you extend your hand. Keep the conversation up until you both release.
▶ Use only one hand. You are not offering condolences, and you probably are not running for office either.
▶ The most important part of the handshake? Your eyes. Look the person directly in the eye and smile.
